Born in San Giovanni Gemini (Agrigento) on 26 November 1970. He entered the Archepiscopal Seminary in 1981. In 1995 he was awarded a Bachelor’s degree in Sacred Theology and in 1998 a Licentiate in Biblical Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome. He was ordained a priest on 8 September 1995. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rome on 27 May 2022, and ordained Bishop on 29 June 2022. From 2023 to 2024 he was Vicegerent of the Diocese of Rome. He was created and published Cardinal in the Consistory of 7 December 2024, of the Title of Santa Maria Assunta e San Giuseppe a Primavalle.

Prefetto della XXI Prefettura di Roma dal 1994 al 1998; membro del Collegio dei Consultori di Roma dal 1995 al 1998. Cappellano di Sua Santità dal 1995. È stato inoltre insegnante di religione in alcune scuole pubbliche di Roma, cappellano coadiutore nelle carceri di Rebibbia e di Regina Coeli; docente dell’Istituto Superiore di Scienze Religiose Ecclesia Mater di Roma; Direttore della Caritas diocesana di Roma dal 1997 al 2009;  Rettore della Chiesa di Santa Cecilia in Trastevere dal 1998 al  2009.

Il 1 giugno 2009  è stato eletto da Sua Santità Bebedetto XVI Vescovo alla Chiesa titolare di Zuri, consacrato l’11 luglio 2009, nominato Vescovo ausiliare di Roma il 1° giugno 2009 fino al 2022. Nominato Vicario dell'Arciprete della Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano il 1 ottobre 2022. Attualmente è membro del Dicastero delle Cause dei Santi.

Born in Rome on 2 August 1946. He carried out his studies in philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Roman Seminary. He was ordained a priest on 14 March 1971, and graduated in Theology from the Pontifical Lateran University, and attended the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology of the Salesian Pontifical University.

He has held the following offices and ministries: assistant at the Pontifical Roman Seminary from 1971 to 1974; parish vicar of San Policarpo in Cinecittà from 1975 to 1985; appointed parish priest of San Policarpo in Cinecittà from 1985 to 1998; Prefect of the XXI Prefecture of Rome from 1994 to 1998; member of the College of Consultors of Rome from 1995 to 1998. Chaplain of His Holiness since 1995. In addition, has taught religion in several public schools in Rome, and has served as coadjutor chaplain in the Rebibbia and Regina Coeli prisons; lecturer of the Ecclesia Mater Higher Institute of Religious Sciences of Rome; Director of diocesan Caritas in Rome from 1997 to 2009; Rector of the Church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere from 1998 to 2009.

On 1 June 2009 he was elected by His Holiness Benedict XVI as bishop of the titular Church of Zuri, consecrated on 11 July 2009, and appointed as Auxiliary Bishop of Rome on 1 June 2009, until 2002. He was appointed as Vicar of the Archpriest of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran on 1 October 2022. He is currently a member of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.
